The most important subject your children will learn in school is mathematics. It’s also one of the things that will come in handy later in life. The following pointers will assist you in shaping your child into the Math champion you desire in the classroom:

Set aside your dislike for the topic.
Just because you didn’t have a positive math experience as a kid doesn’t mean you should pass that on to your child. Instead, allow your youngster to start with a blank slate and figure out their feelings about the subject on their own. Then, if they discover that they enjoy it, there is a significant possibility that they will become proficient at it in the future. After all, if a person does not enjoy something, they will never fully master it. So, leave your prejudices at the door.

Stop whining about how complex math is.
The constant discussion of Math’s difficulty is ineffective. It diminishes the child’s excitement for the topic. It has the potential to terrify, discourage, and demoralize children from engaging in number-related activities. No of how you feel about math, you should ensure that your children enjoy the challenge it provides. Take a positive approach so they don’t develop an internal fear.

Begin teaching them as soon as possible.
Sure, children eventually learn about mathematical ideas as they grow older, but getting them started early is a natural next step toward academic greatness. Teaching kids the fundamentals when they are as early as a year old is an excellent method to lay a strong base for evaluation and computing in their developing brains. It teaches kids to recognize patterns and forms while piquing their interest and curiosity. Numbers are generally the very first skills they will grasp with ease so that you might start there.

When teaching mathematical concepts, use games.
Because games are participatory, they are successful in educating mathematical ideas. It poses both a task and a role for the child’s immature mind to win. This could also continue to promote out their competitive spirit.

Initially, you may accomplish this by using riddles and visualizations. Then, you can progress to physical activities if your kid can make some movements without risking an injury. If they’ve already been taught these principles, another game-related tip is to use smartphone applications to reinforce and assess their understanding.

Rather than focusing on the result, focus on the process.
Many of us approach learning with a goal-oriented mindset. However, this should not be used for children simply learning about concepts. It’s understandable if they don’t get the answers right the first time. Instead, show them how to do it right so that they may reach up with the right solution on their own. Speed will be added later. Do not try to hasten their learning.

Make sure they understand why what they’re learning is essential.
Making your child comprehend the importance of what they are learning in the context of the actual world is one strategy to inspire them to learn Math. In addition, the knowledge kids receive in this subject daily will come in handy when they are older. For example, consider the value of understanding how to exchange money from one currency to another. This instills in them a sense of the importance of learning.

Teach Lessons in a Step-by-Step Approach.
The format of the lessons you will teach will play a significant role in guaranteeing that your child excels in Math. The syllabus will be applied gradually, beginning with the most fundamental concepts. Following those core concepts, the classes should progress in difficulty. Because the children have no prior experience with these teachings, they must be acclimatized to what is required of them.

Consider mathematical skills that must first be warmed up before moving on to the actual activity. Math skills work in a similar manner.

Conclusion
Parenthood should not be a difficult task. You will have delight as a parent if you know how to help your children with various elements of life. To assist your children in excelling in arithmetic, use the suggestions above. If you are a preoccupied parent, you can employ a math tutor to help your children with their math issues. A competent math tutor can assist your children in enjoying arithmetic and overcoming their fear of it.

Teachers are fundamental to the academic performance of all students they teach. However, parents must play a more significant role in aiding children at risk of academic failure or performing below their academic potential. It isn’t an easy feat with a classroom full of other pupils who require the teacher’s assistance and guidance.

Another challenge for many teachers is learning how to deal with cultural and socioeconomic class differences among their students. Variations in learning and social styles and communication skills are examples of such differences, and the chasms they can create between teacher and student can be unpleasant, if not overpowering.

On the other hand, teachers may dramatically boost their odds of connecting with students and, as a result, their prospects of academic success with the proper support from colleagues and administrators. Teachers can assist pupils in achieving this goal by:

Having high expectations for all pupils, regardless of their academic performance in the past.

Assisting all students to feel a sense of belonging to the school and educational community. Increased school belonging (i.e., feelings of being valued, acknowledged, accepted, respected, and encouraged to participate in school and classroom activities) may lower the number of kids who drop out of school.

Creating learning settings that encourage students to believe they can grasp academic subjects. Students are encouraged to compete to achieve higher and higher self-imposed goals. As a result of such learning environments, students have a more heightened sense of self-efficacy, which helps them attain academic success.

Seeking out, discovering, and applauding any effort that all students, even those failing or underachieving, make toward learning. Teachers can praise the learning process’s intellectual and behavioral aspects and encourage the child to glorify himself. That entails gently correcting even incorrect answers. We can accomplish this by complimenting the effort rather than dismissing the response provided.

Assessing their students’ learning styles but understanding that being different is not a flaw. This information can be utilized to gradually incorporate learning and processing strategies that will assist the child in developing the abilities needed to succeed in school, college, or the workplace.

Encouraging kids to ask questions if they don’t grasp anything or require additional information. Many pupils are concerned about appearing “dumb” in front of their peers and/or teacher.

Educating students on the importance of taking notes and reviewing course materials to succeed academically. Teachers can also assist kids in developing effective test-taking skills, which is an area where intelligent students of all cultural origins sometimes struggle, resulting in poor grades and self-esteem.

Boosting self-assurance. Students’ inability to succeed in mathematics is due to a lack of confidence.

Encouraging curiosity and leaving room for it. The finest advice for pupils who want to succeed in math is to pay attention in class and ask for clarification when they don’t understand something.

Placing a greater emphasis on conceptual comprehension than on procedure. Working hard to grasp math concepts and apply them rather than memorizing formulas if you want to do well is essential.

Providing authentic problems to encourage kids to participate in arithmetic. Students need to have the drive, initiative, and incentive to succeed in math, and applying math to real-world problems increases student engagement and knowledge.

Encouraging others to have a positive attitude toward arithmetic. Teachers recommend that parents refrain from speaking adversely about arithmetic, particularly suggesting that it is difficult or pointless. Instead, they should encourage their children to persevere and assist them in finding math mentors if they cannot answer questions.

We’ll go over some practices that parents may employ to aid their children with math in this blog. These are some ideas for keeping the learning going even while everyone is out of school!

Choose two or three of the methods below to implement throughout the year. They’re designed to assist your youngster in improving his or her math skills and building confidence in the classroom.

Techniques for enhancing your math skills

Include enriching activities that connect mathematics to everyday life:

Talk about how many plates and spoons to put out for dinner

Have your child count comparable items while you put away groceries

Have your child count comparable items while you put away groceries

Ask your child to compare prices by asking questions such as, “Which can of sweet corn is more expensive?”

Allow your youngster to weigh the fresh produce; older children can figure out the cost of various items.

Talk about the number of days in the month, the number of days before a specific occasion, etc. by reading the days and dates on a calendar.

Practice arithmetic skills at home using computer software, online games, or apps. Oryx Learning offers math practice exercises, formative and summative assessments, and a personalized learning dashboard to facilitate a self-paced learning path to mastery. It provides learners with a strong foundation to develop higher-order thinking skills.

At home, provide some math tasks. Give each member 13 cards from a deck of cards, have them flip a card, and then have your child select who wins the set of cards based on whose card has the highest value. In the event of a tie, place three more cards face-down before turning the last card up; the higher card on that turn wins all the cards. Play until one player has accumulated all of the cards in the deck.

Keep empty containers and write different prices on them, then play Store by adding up the prices for various items with a calculator.

Computation

Count by twos, fives, or tens orally

Engage your children to complete connect-the-dots activities.

Make a number book with your youngster, with a page for each numeral from one to ten. Have your youngster glue newspaper and magazine clippings explaining the number idea on each page (two birds, three penguins, or four sheep).

Count and pair objects around the house to see if there are an odd or even number of them.

Give your child verbal math tasks to solve. “Add three to seven, multiply by six, subtract four, and divide by eight. “What is your response?” Slowly speak at first until your child improves his or her ability to solve these mental challenges.

Assist your youngster with recognizing percentages on signs, in newspapers, and in magazines.

Teach your youngster how to read food labels. Assign them the task of calculating the percentage of each nutrient included in each item.

Geometry

Have your child fold a sheet of paper in half and draw a shape along the fold; cut out the shape and unfold the paper to make a symmetrical shape.

Look for geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, circles, and rectangles all about the house.

Make shapes out of everyday household things like toothpicks, marshmallows, empty toilet paper rolls, twist ties, sticks, and paper.

Direct your child to look for objects that are the same size and form while traveling together to help them recognize and identify real-world examples of right angles (e.g., the corner of a book) and parallel lines (e.g., train tracks).

Measurement

When you’re cooking, teach your youngster how to set the kitchen timer.

Draw an analog clock face with the hour and minute hands at ten o’clock. Instruct your child to write the time shown on a piece of paper.

Sort diverse objects (e.g., books, tins, and cans) according to their size and measurement attributes (e.g., length, weight, and volume). Use comparison words like “taller,” “shorter,” “narrower,” “wider,” “heaviest,” “lightest,” “more,” “less,” “about,” and “same” to talk with your children about how they are arranged.

Gather a measuring tape, ruler, cup, gallon container, and scale to measure objects in your home using a standard measuring tool. Talk about the different things you can measure with each.

Review the measurements’ comparable names. “How many cups are in a liter?” for example.

Encourage your kids to use words like “whole,” “half,” “thirds,” and “fourths” in everyday situations.

Statistics, probability, graphing

Open a bag of Smarties, Skittles, or M&Ms and construct a bar graph of how many of each color you can find within. Find three examples of different sorts of graphs in a math textbook or on the internet.

Locate the coordinates of locations on a map.

For a week, watch the weather report, write down the temperatures for each day, and then graph them.

Keep track of your favorite team’s game results and graph them over a period of several weeks.

Make a list of things that will never happen, things that might happen, and things that will definitely happen with your child.

What color is the kitchen’s wall?

What color is the textbook in your math class?

What is the address of the house on the other side of the street?

If I remove one object from the table, how many are left?

What is the number of exits from the school building?

Encourage your children to solve problems in real life: “We only have one can of pineapples, but we need five.” “How many more do we require?”

Pose questions that require equal participation. “Nine students share 27 candies equally among them, for example.” “How many candies will each person get?”

Assist your child in researching the population and land area of your state and city, and comparing these figures to those of other states and cities.

Families play an important role in distant school learning. Use these effective pointers to help your child progress.

Schools and other educational institutions were pushed to transfer their teaching online in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, often without warning or training for instructors. As a result, teachers and students are getting into the swing of teaching and studying from home now that it’s been a few months. It’s also a good time to experiment with new teaching strategies, particularly those that perform well with remote learning.

What is flipping the classroom?

The term “flipped classroom” refers to a specific instructional technique. Flipped Classroom’s basic idea is to flip the typical educational arrangement by offering instructional materials outside the classroom, generally as online material. It brings more physical tasks into the classroom, including formerly considered homework and group work. Students in a flipped classroom view online lectures, participate in online conversations, or conduct research at home. Students work on projects, participate in debates, and solve problems in class with the teacher’s help.

The teacher is the primary focus of the instruction in a traditional classroom. They are typically the ones who deliver new material to students through a lecture or presentation and coach them through practice tasks. In addition, students must answer questions, write essays, or complete projects as homework.

Flipped learning is a unique approach to education. It’s a pedagogical strategy in which direct instruction transfers from the group to the individual learning environment. The instructor directs students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter in the resulting group area, which is converted into a dynamic, interactive learning environment.

To put it another way, flipping the classroom is a method of teaching that flips the usual learning structure on its head. Rather than delivering a new learning concept in class, teachers prepare a presentation of the information and distribute it to students to watch or read prior to class. The remainder of the class period is devoted to group activities, class discussion, and peer-to-peer collaboration.

What are the benefits of a flipped classroom?

There are various advantages to using the flipped classroom method. This student-centered approach gives teachers more time to evaluate comprehension, respond to questions, and clear up any misunderstandings pupils may have about a new topic.

It means that instead of spending class time explaining the fundamentals of a new topic or idea, you may use your contact time to assist students in putting their new knowledge into practice. Moving direct instruction outside of class time also frees up time in the classroom to focus on creating a dynamic learning environment with plenty of differentiation opportunities.

There are numerous advantages for students as well! They will become active participants in their own education rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Flipping the classroom enables students to take charge of their own education, allowing them to develop the kind of self-discipline necessary for lifelong learning. Exam outcomes, student engagement, and teacher-student communication have all been demonstrated to improve in a flipped classroom.

Why flipped classrooms work for distance learning?

Because students are already doing so much learning from home, distance learning is a great opportunity to check out the flipped classroom. As the teacher-student interaction transforms from an instructional to a collaborative model, it will strengthen and improve your

relationship with your students. This can also aid with motivation. It makes for a more dynamic and interesting online lesson when your class time is focused on the practical application of ideas, student knowledge, and peer-to-peer communication.

With remote learning on the rise, it’s never a bad idea to experiment with instructional approaches that enable students to learn independently.

In three simple steps, learn how to flip your classroom.

So, there are strong reasons to try out the flipped classroom method – but how do you go about doing so? To get you started, here’s a brief breakdown.

Prepare your subject topic for independent study.

In advance of your online class, prepare the information you want your students to study. It’s critical to think about the best manner to provide this information. Is it through video? Is it possible to do so using a text extract? Is it better to present it as an infographic or a podcast? Maybe it’s a mix of all of the above.

Although video is the most popular type of direct education, there are many more possibilities. Between five and 10 minutes is the most effective video duration. Consider how you may make your presentation more interesting and inventive. You’ll end up with a terrific bank of your own video materials thanks to Oryx Learning’s amazing instructional videos, such as how to implement and use virtual manipulatives for mathematics.

Motivate your students to study for class.

The success of a flipped classroom is determined by the ability of your pupils to adapt correctly to preparing for class, which might cause teachers to be hesitant. There are, however, a few tactics you might use to excite your children.

You could check-in the day before the session to remind students to prepare for the lesson by reviewing the content beforehand. Another alternative is to inform students that the class will begin with a brief quiz on the content they have already learned. You could also request that they develop a list of questions to ask on the subject. You might also invite your pupils to come up with specific examples to bring to class and share with their classmates if the direct lesson is explaining a subject.

Plan your class time to support and deepen student understanding

It’s a good idea to review the topic at the start of your class, giving students the chance to raise any questions that arise during their preparation for class. Then, during class, incorporate activities that encourage active learning, such as group work, discussion, presenting student-created content, debates, and project work.

Active learning activities not only make your online lessons more engaging but also help students build 21st-century skills by giving them more time to think critically, communicate creatively, and improve their information and technology literacy.

How does Oryx Learning help with the flipped classroom for distance learning?

Oryx Learning is an interactive learning platform that assists children in enhancing their scholastic development by including them in a variety of learning and problem-solving activities. Oryx learning is unique as it improves students’ learning capacities by limiting the amount of time they have to answer questions. In addition, the curriculum not only provides study aids but also practice questions with guided tutorials, solved example problems with answers and solutions. Many teachers endorse this platform since it is simple to use.

Both teachers and students will discover useful Math resources at Oryx Learning. Creating a pleasurable learning environment Math practice exercises, tests, instructor resources, and a personalized learning experience that allows learners to grow at their own pace are all available.

ORYX Learning allows teachers to effortlessly track their students’ academic development. In real-time, the Analytics tool effectively monitors progress, strengths, weaknesses, areas of interest, and bottlenecks. Oryx learning reports are intended to motivate students to accomplish more while also providing important information to help them overcome their deficiencies. Teachers can also quickly assign the topic or skill their students need to practice. In addition, it assesses the individual elements of a topic or skill and provides a comprehensive and extensive analysis of individual performance.

Even when kids are in class, technology will continue to play a role in their learning. This will aid in maintaining consistency. For example, if schools are briefly closed, kids will not miss instructional time because of the technology routine. In addition, students can collaborate online because most group work does not comply with social distancing.

The online environment is demanding for most teachers and is not sustainable, trying to teach every lesson in a face-to-face. As incorporated with Oryx Learning, flipped learning allows students to work individually while still ensuring that when classes do meet online, they can collaborate and work together more efficiently.

What is the significance of discussion in math? Simply put, it engages more parts of the brain and aids in a student’s understanding of a mathematical idea.

As you may know, children think about and solve problems in a variety of ways. Therefore, one student’s strategy may be quite different from that of another. On the other hand, students have a meaningful mathematical dialogue when they share their work and compare similarities and differences. Instead of simply listening to and copying a teacher’s problem-solving approach step by step, this engages more brain areas.

The layout of math classrooms is shifting across the globe. Students are no longer sitting calmly in rows, copying down a problem their teacher has solved. Instead, many of the classrooms are set up in a group arrangement. Collaboration, productive struggle, and rich student-to-student discourse are all possible as a result.

The Fishbowl Discussion is a teaching method that promotes active student engagement, reflection, and knowledge depth. The fish (in the fishbowl) will be played by a small group of students, with the remainder of the class acting as viewers (out of the fishbowl). Students in the bowl take part in a discussion in response to a prompt from the teacher. Outside the bowl, students listen and consider the differing viewpoints.

Use it when you want

Ensure that all students participate in a conversation,

Improve speaking and listening skills,

Encourage reflection on and assessment of the aspects of a good discussion, or

Provide an effective approach for debating controversial or difficult issues.

The fishbowl strategy is useful when discussing problem-solving techniques for a complex problem or as part of a lesson.

Students can talk about how they solved a question. This strategy permits the inner group—the fish—to discuss how they solved the problem. The outside group can ask the inner group questions once the inner group is finished. One method is to discuss the similarities and differences in problem-solving strategies. This maintains a high level of engagement and tempo throughout the course.

What will you need?

Laptop, tablet, or mobile phone

Preparation

Come up with an investigative question or problem that has a lot of different methods to solve.

Create benchmarks for students to evaluate the quality of the discussion.

Decide on the method you want to take and get the technologies you’ll need to make it happen (ex., Create a shared Google Doc for each group or set up your Zoom session for the class).

Procedure

During scheduled class time, direct students to the Zoom session.

Give the students a topic to talk about or discuss.

Give students instructions on how to listen to and participate in the discussion.

Assign students to small groups. Limit the number in each group to 3-5.

Allow small groups time to gather their thoughts (up to 5 minutes) before beginning the Fishbowl.

After 5 minutes, call students back into the main room from their breakout groups.

Begin the Fishbowl conversation by highlighting one group’s performance.

Hover your cursor over the students you want to highlight as Fish in the Fishbowl in Zoom. Select “Spotlight for all” from the three dots in their window. This should be done for each kid who will be a fish in the Fishbowl.

Re-pose the question to the fish and invite them to begin debating or discussing it.

Non-fish students take notes or evaluate the topic using a rubric shared via Google Docs. Students are given time to ask questions of the participants in various scenarios.

When the debate is finished, concentrate the class on the following fishbowl group’s performance (“unpin” spotlighted students in Zoom).

Facilitate a debriefing when the fishbowl timer runs out. Students should consider the discussion’s strengths and flaws and the quality of their performances, and what they learned from the activity. A fishbowl assessment form could help with the debriefing.

Plenary

Review the outcomes of the activity. Assess students’ knowledge through Oryx Learning which offers math practice exercises, formative and summative assessments, and a personalized learning dashboard to facilitate a self-paced learning path to mastery. It provides learners with a strong foundation to develop higher-order thinking skills.

Mathematics is one of the most important courses in every school curriculum. After a lengthy study, students are expected to be able to perform both simple and intricate math calculations. Teachers not only teach this subject during regular class hours but also give homework to help students improve their knowledge. Math homework is necessary for a variety of reasons.

These are some of them:

Memory and cognitive capacity are improved.
It’s important to remember that whatever a teacher teaches in class only accounts for a small portion of what a student is required to know. As a result, the student’s individual learning efforts contribute a larger amount. In this situation, if a student intends to pursue further education at the college or university level, he or she must master the art of independent study. Students can recall what they learned during tests or in real-life applications if they perform things on their own. As a result, math homework improves a student’s memory and critical thinking skills.

Instill good habits and study skills.
When teachers assign math homework to students at lower academic levels, they are attempting to instill in them the importance of learning independently. Students who finish homework in lower classes perform better in higher levels of learning, according to studies, because teachers in those institutions do not waste time tracking students down for their tasks.

Exam preparation is essential.
Exams are an important part of the learning process in all educational institutions. Teachers and parents may not be able to determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses without them. When teachers assign math homework to pupils, they do so as a means of improving their skills and sharpening their knowledge in preparation for their exams. As a result, the more math homework a student can finish, the better prepared they will be for tests.

Develop research skills.
Teachers do not expect students to remember all of the knowledge when they give them math assignments. The assignment of math homework allows pupils to conduct research. Data is a tool for generating critical judgments in modern times. The ability to acquire and analyze data from a variety of sources improves a student’s research abilities. Furthermore, thanks to current technology, students now have access to online tutors who can help them with their “do my math for me” requests. Because some students are embarrassed to raise questions in class, online tutors give them a place to ask questions and get help with their math homework.

Encourages pupils to go over their notes in class.
Teachers frequently assign homework based on what they have covered in class. In this instance, students can complete their assignments quickly without having to hunt for additional sources of information. If students were not given homework, there is a good probability they would spend the entire evening wasting their time and never reviewing their classwork.

Allows parents to learn about what their children are learning in class.
When it comes to the well-being of students, parents are crucial. It’s necessary to recognize that getting kids to school is an important element of their development. School assists youngsters in developing the core learning abilities they require. Teachers provide parents the opportunity to examine what their children are learning in class when they assign math homework. The parent has a responsibility to assist the child during the assessment procedure. It’s important to remember that when a parent assists their child with math homework, they’re not only helping them learn something new, but they’re also strengthening the link between the parent and the child.

Allows teachers to assess the effectiveness of their lessons.
Teachers might use homework to determine whether the lessons and materials they are delivering in class are effective. It serves as a platform for them to learn. When a teacher offers a math assignment, and a major portion of the class fails, this indicates that the students did not understand what the teacher was teaching. As a result, the instructor is pushed to discover a simpler way to teach their students and ensure that they understand the topics.

Oryx learning is an interactive learning platform that helps children in boosting their educational development by engaging them in different activities for learning and solving problems. It provides the option to teachers and parents of giving online homework and assignments with flexible deadlines for submission catering individual needs of learners. Teachers and parents have the option of assigning topics and skills in which their students or children need to strengthen. They can also view the progress report and identify the weak areas.

In a nutshell, math homework is important for students, instructors, and parents for a variety of reasons. It serves as a platform for parents to track their children’s development in school as well as a learning tool for kids and teachers. Contrary to what some stakeholders suggest, math homework is a crucial part of learning.

There are so many buzzwords that it’s easy to get distracted and lose track of what you’re studying in education. In addition, all of the bustles can make it challenging to teach.

Differentiation, individualization, and personalization are three of the most perplexing buzzwords in education. However, personalized learning goes further and encapsulates differentiation and individualized learning.

Students are at the center of everything in the classroom with personalized learning. By actively contributing to creating their learning, students take complete control of their education. As a result, they have a voice and the ability to make decisions.

The basis of your child’s life is education. It’s one of the essential aspects of their formative years. But, when it comes to curriculum development, not enough of us remember that education is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Every child is unique. They have various demands and interests, and they learn in different ways.

Here are a few advantages of personalized learning models.

1. Increased Self-assurance
Confidence is a state of mind. It’s all about seeing every circumstance as an opportunity to learn and grow. It’s about knowing you’ve “got this,” but not be disheartened if you don’t. When children struggle in school, one of the first things they suffer is their self-esteem. A child’s lack of confidence might then spread outside the classroom, affecting other aspects of their lives.

Parents may need to look outside of the home and school setting to assist a youngster recover confidence. In addition to parents and teachers, adults can play an essential role in giving children the encouragement and support they require to develop. When it comes to learning, the collaboration, and alliance that children have with their tutor help them gain confidence. Children are sometimes too nervous about raising their hand in class and acknowledging they don’t know something before their classmates. It’s critical to provide a secure environment in which children can ask questions and confess. They are shy of being criticized if they ask something.

2. Communication and Self-advocacy Skills
Children may find the subject they are learning to be perplexing, but they may be unable to pinpoint what is causing them to be confused. A tutor can provide a child with the one-on-one attention they require to better understand their own unique needs and growth areas. With this, youngsters believe they not only have the power to speak up about a problem they’re having, but also the assurance that they’ll be able to overcome it.

Educators refer to this ability to understand and explain one’s learning as “metacognition,” a critical component of learning how to learn. Giving students the ability to speak openly about themselves as learners is an excellent strategy to increase their freedom and confidence. In addition, it effectively teaches children how to solve difficulties independently in the future.

3. Play to their Abilities
Tutoring isn’t simply for kids with trouble with a particular subject. It might be equally advantageous for individuals who excel in a specific topic. Don’t pass up an opportunity if your child has a particular interest or strength in a subject, or if they’re bored at school because it’s too easy.

A tutor can help a kid who is currently doing well in school reach more ambitious goals, similar to how athletes hire a coach to enhance their skills. In addition, tutors can provide more sophisticated content and insights than what is typically taught in the classroom, allowing students to broaden and strengthen their knowledge. Developing those skills could lead to scholarships, university course opportunities, and exciting employment opportunities, as well as a stronger love of learning.

One-on-one tutoring allows ambitious students to get into a subject and go above and beyond what their classmates are capable of. As a result, their intellectual curiosity is piqued, and they approach all learning with greater enthusiasm and aptitude for deep thought.

4. Getting Caught Up Before Major Educational Milestones
Exam anxiety is real, even though education is about so much more than end-of-year examinations. According to a survey, 80 percent of senior students suffer from anxiousness. This tension might make it difficult for pupils to catch up and prepare for a test. A tutor can assist your youngster in identifying and concentrating on specific areas. where they need to improve, provide practice and feedback, and design an actionable plan to help assist them in feeling best ready for their future exams.

5. Taking Pleasure in Learning
It’s no secret that when children have fun, they learn more successfully. Therefore, a tutor can modify their sessions to make curricular content interesting since they have more time to create a rapport with their student and learn what engages them as an individual.

When learners begin to ‘understand’ a topic they previously struggled with and feel a sense of personal accomplishment, they are experiencing the joy of learning. It can also happen when a learner feels a connection to a text or topic and develops a personal identity. Children have an innate curiosity, but the classroom dynamic can sometimes stifle it with its social complexity. Personal tutoring is an excellent approach to foster and develop a child’s natural curiosity, allowing them to grow and love learning rather than just going through the motions.

6. Students Have the Freedom to Work at their Own Speed
Due to a large number of students crammed into one space, most classrooms have arbitrary unit deadlines and a slow pace. Before moving on, personalized learning models can take the time to ensure that your child thoroughly comprehends each unit. Furthermore, no youngster is forced to waste time on a fully understood subject until they become bored and disconnected from it. Children, on the other hand, are continually challenged and excited. They may learn more successfully since they have internalized the building components that make up each higher unit.

7. Students Can Set Personal Objectives
In personalized learning, students can choose how far they want to go. As a result, they’ve gotten much more motivated all of a sudden. When students seek essential goals rather than arbitrary standards set by others, they become active participants in their own learning.

8. Exploratory Learning Possibilities
Personalized learning gives up a whole new universe of possibilities in terms of education. Have you ever seen a child who is truly enthralled by the concept of multiplication? When they’re enthusiastic about a subject, they become instant experts. They are capable of analyzing patterns and solving challenging problems. Students in school can benefit from personalized learning. They can learn more about areas that interest them and better understand their abilities and contributions. This enables children to adjust to a future profession and passion.

9. One-on-One Feedback with Personalized Learning
Personalized learning provides opportunities for one-on-one feedback from an instructor that most students do not have access to. Instructors can pinpoint a difficulty or hindrance that is preventing your child from responding to new learning and can help them develop their interests and strengths. Furthermore, children are aware that someone is involved in their education which is familiar with them and is invested in their success and advancement.

10. Individualized Instruction for All Learning Styles and Abilities
Personalized learning meets the requirements of children of all abilities. Even better, they can still profit much from a customized program. This is a refreshing shift for pupils who are used to lessons that cater to children with a wide range of abilities and interests. A range of students’ needs and interests can be met by using aural and visual imagery (words, photos, videos, and narration) and self-exploration possibilities.

Oryx Learning provides a flexible framework that allows students’ unique experiences, past knowledge, problems, and abilities to influence and shape their learning. Students choose their focus and convey their information within each unit of study. As a result, teaching methods, learning outcomes, and performance standards differ depending on the requirements and preferences of each student.

Personalized learning is based on competency-driven mastery. The competencies are inextricably tied to everyday life experiences and each student’s plans. When each child in a class has distinct life experiences, how can the relevance of learning be the same for all of them?

Oryx Learning assists educators in their transition away from textbooks by delivering smart technology-enabled learning and assessment conceptual frameworks. This technique helps students understand what they need to do to graduate to the next level of knowledge and abilities while supporting teachers’ preparation.

Students’ digital portfolios follow them throughout their educational careers, allowing them quick access to evidence of their accomplishments and feedback received. Having this information at their fingertips will enable students to understand how they’ve progressed as learners and consider constructive suggestions and pushes them to continue trying for mastery.

It’s not just about individualized learning for us at Oryx Learning; it’s also about the personal side of learning. With technology becoming more prevalent in education, we must emphasize people and the ‘personal’ in individualized education. From a different perspective, we must remember that individualized learning is all about collaboration at all levels. Because it is individualized, it does not mean that kids work in isolation, but rather that they work together at their speed, guiding their learning with the help of their peers, adults, and all of the learning tools available to them.

Is it the same to teach in an online classroom as it is in a regular classroom? We’re all aware that the answer is no, it’s not the same! As freshly hired distance learning teachers, we must now learn an entirely new system in order to: provide online instruction.

remotely interact with students.

provide feedback (graded or ungraded) in a virtual environment.

In a digital environment, develop a sense of community.

maintain a relationship

Some proposals for improving math instruction in the age of the coronavirus are as follows:

1. Students must feel safe before they can learn.

When kids are intimidated, their brains release adrenaline, which limits cognitive activities as well as any other unnecessary activity. Setting the framework for successful learning and communicating high standards begins with a well-organized classroom and a supportive connection with students. Students are more likely to take risks in such an environment, and their mathematical anxiety, or feelings of fear and tension when practicing math, is reduced.

We’ve discovered that creating a safe environment is much more critical now. Many students live in fast, stressful situations. Some look after younger siblings or elderly relatives, while others live in a tiny house with others. When kids and teachers are forced to stay at home all day, tensions can rise. Establish defined routines and processes in our online assignments and meetings to keep a steady atmosphere so that students understand what we expect of them. These routines benefit pupils as well as us by assisting us in managing our lives.

We must work hard to retain the trust with pupils that we have worked so hard to establish over the school year. According to research, developing an emotional connection aid learning by allowing the brain to focus on higher-order thinking. Even small gestures like checking in with individual students on a regular basis can demonstrate our concern for them and help to alleviate kids’ sense of alienation from school. The use of students’ prior experiences to improve their learning capacity is an important aspect of culturally responsive teaching, which involves building trust. Maintaining contacts also keeps our moods up and stops us from feeling alone.

2. Students should be able to understand math.

We need to make sure that the arithmetic we teach makes sense to children when we organize our lessons. We resist the temptation to reduce math to “tricks” and shortcuts, notwithstanding the constraints of remote instruction. Such ill-advised efforts to save time or energy can swiftly backfire if students regard the job as worthless and refuse to do it. We need to incorporate smaller sets of questions that students can go through independently because we can’t undertake the cooperative activities that assist kids to acquire conceptual comprehension.

3. All kids require strong math instructions.

Instead of doing mindless computations, students should answer difficult tasks that challenge their intellect. Students can actively build knowledge through short self-guided discovery activities. Recognizing our students’ needs as well as our own hidden prejudices might help us make our lessons more relevant and culturally appropriate.

4. To be successful, teachers do not have to do everything.

Our classes normally consisted of a daily in-class lesson followed by a variety of tasks such as homework, tests, quizzes, and projects under normal circumstances. Our students collaborated in class with us and outside of class with friends, family, or by themselves.

However, in times like these, everyone’s routines—ours and our students—are severely interrupted. As a result, we have to be flexible and considerate of both students’ and our own limited time. Make sure that when we arrange lessons, pupils will be able to finish them in a reasonable amount of time. We have to adjust our expectations and assignments to account for the fact that kids will not be able to spend the same amount of time at home as they do at school.

5. Creating Math Assignments online.

Without in-person meetings, many students’ main connection with us is through online assignments. As a result, we must make these tasks as relevant and doable as feasible. Here are a few options for us to consider.

Putting Together Unit Plans
We can arrange our instruction by producing unit plans, which are papers that map out the primary learning goals and the sequencing of lessons for a unit, just like we do with our regular teaching. Unit plans don’t have to be lengthy or difficult to understand.

We need to revise our unit plans because our year-end targets have changed. In many circumstances, both the scope and content of our instruction can be limited. Topics that would be too difficult for us to convey remotely can be skipped. Instead, we can only deliver new content if it builds on previously taught notions. Give assignments, such as projects or other activities, on occasion to provide a nice break from our usual.
However, these activities should be limited to short tasks that students can perform largely on their own with little or no research. Many examples of online guided-discovery exercises can be found on the Desmos and GeoGebra websites.

Close the year with some form of year-end review, regardless of the topic we cover. This serves to create a sense of completion for the year and increases the possibility that our students will remember the content.

Giving Online Assignments
We need to set routines and procedures in our online assignments just as we do in our physical classrooms. Routines and processes help pupils focus on learning by making classrooms more predictable.
Simplify your work by assigning no more than one assignment each day for each course or subject to keep our online assignments more structured. Give both classwork and homework in normal situations but delivering two or more online tasks per day can overwhelm students who aren’t used to managing their time at home. Post one assignment per day to make your work more achievable. If you’re going to give a big assignment, break it up into smaller chunks.

When it comes to assignment deadlines, try to be flexible. Despite the fact that we teachers announce deadlines clearly (and frequently), be flexible and accept late papers without penalty. If students repeatedly fail to show up for class, you can reach out to see what you can do to assist them. We find that compassion goes a long way at times like these.

Oryx learning is an interactive learning platform that helps children in boosting their educational development by engaging them in different activities for learning and solving problems. It provides the option to teachers of giving online homework and assignments with flexible deadlines for submission catering individual needs of learners.

6. Organizing Math Class Meetings Online

Arrange remote training that includes regular online meetings with students. We can’t see how students respond to our education by just uploading assignments with videos or web links. Even using online forms (such as Google Forms) or websites that automatically assess student work isn’t enough—our students demand more rapid feedback. More than a virtual representation of in-class instruction is provided through online sessions. They also allow us to communicate with pupils in real-time and provide them with more personalized attention.

Despite the importance of these meetings, we must realize that many students are unable to attend. Some of our students have restricted access to the internet, live in a busy and noisy environment, or look after younger siblings. We can modify and publish a recording of our online meetings, such as a video recording or a slide presentation, to accommodate them. Separate appointments with other students may be scheduled at a later date. However, we must attempt to keep these one-on-one encounters to a minimum, as the time spent meeting with individual children can soon mount up! Above all, we must not take the absence of participation of kids personally.

As we’ve transitioned from in-person to remote training, we’ve adjusted our teaching in a variety of ways. Our basic beliefs about math education, pedagogy, and students, on the other hand, haven’t altered.

What are Algebra Tiles?
Algebra tiles are manipulatives used in mathematics. This math manipulative promotes inquiry based learning. These virtual math manipulatives can help students better understand algebraic concepts and definitions. The tiles can be used to teach a variety of concepts, including counting, area, perimeter, and arithmetic, as well as equations, factoring quadratics, algebraic long division, and simultaneous equations. Learn how to represent and solve algebraic problems using these virtual algebra tiles to represent variables and constants. Factor and expand equations, substitute variable expressions, and solve equations. By adding tiles, deleting zero sets, and modeling equations, students can go through algebra.
In this blog, we’ll look at a few algebra tiles examples of how Algebra tiles have been useful for teachers introducing this complex subject to students.

Counting
We introduce students to Algebra tiles at a young age by using them as simple counters, using only the small, square tile. We can ask students to use the tiles to represent a specific number or to count up or down from a certain starting number. This can be expanded to counting up or down in specific increments, such as “Here are 6 tiles; can you count up in twos until you have 10 tiles?”

Arithmetic
Algebra tiles can be used to teach the concept of equals sign. The equals sign can be introduced by establishing the rule that the number of tiles on both sides of the sign must always be the same. I recommend spending a lot of time with young children making number sentences like 4 = 4, 5 = 3 Plus 2, 7 = 10 – 3, and so on. It is impossible to ignore the significance of the equals sign.

Counting can be extended by adding and subtracting positive numbers. These virtual algebra tiles can be used to demonstrate how addition and subtraction work, as well as to give numbers and symbols in number sentences meaning.

Multiplication can be represented in a variety of ways through these math manipulatives, including arrays, areas, collections of groups, and so on.

Grouping, sharing, and repeated subtraction are all examples of division.

Negative number addition and subtraction involves the use of the reverse side of the tile, which is the first step in introducing the concept of Zero Pairs.

Zero Pairs
Zero Pairs is the most important concept in the use of Algebra Tiles. Many teachers want to get to using the tiles for algebraic expressions or equations as early as possible, so they don’t spend enough time establishing the notion of Zero Pairs. The effectiveness of using Algebra tiles is restricted unless this concept is well explained and understood.

The reverse of each positive tile is a red tile. The tile’s red face represents the tile’s negative. Combining a tile with its red counterpart would result in a total area of zero because the red tile has the same absolute dimensions and area as the yellow tile.

We may introduce addition and subtraction of integers using the Zero Pairs concept.

Add Algebraic Expressions
Let’s solve the following algebraic expression using algebra tiles.
(3x – 4) + (-x + 1)

1. Model each linear expression.
To model each linear expression, drag the virtual algebra tile that represents the corresponding part of the expression.
First, model the expression 3x – 4. Drag 3 green positive x tiles and 4 negative 1-tiles.
Next, model the expression -x + 1. Drag 1 red negative x tile and 1 positive 1-tile.

2. Remove all zero pairs.
Click on the eraser to remove all zero pairs. One positive x-tile will cancel one negative x-tile. Similarly, one negative 1-tile will cancel out one positive 1-tile.

3. Write a linear expression for the remaining tiles.
We can see that we have two positive x-tiles and three negative 1-tiles remaining. Hence, the answer is -2x – 3.

Subtract Algebraic Expressions
Let’s solve the following algebraic expression using virtual algebra tiles.
(x – 4) – (-2x + 1)

1. Model each linear expression.
First, model the expression x – 4. Drag 1 green positive x-tile and four negative 1-tiles.

2. Add or remove zero pairs as needed to subtract.
We can see that there is 1 positive green x-tile, and we need to remove 2 negative x-tiles. As we don’t have any negative x-tile, we will have to add 2 zero pairs of x-tiles.

Next, click on the eraser to remove 2 negative x-tiles. We have 3 green positive x-tiles remaining.

We also have 4 negative 1-tiles, and we are asked to remove a positive 1-tile. As we don’t have any positive 1-tiles, we need to add a zero pair of 1-tiles. Now we can easily remove a positive 1-tile using the eraser. We have 5 negative 1-tiles remaining.

3. Write a linear expression for the remaining tiles.
We can see that we have 3 positive x-tiles and 5 negative 1-tiles remaining. Hence, the answer is 3x – 5.

Divide Algebraic Equations
Let’s solve the following algebraic equation using algebra tiles digital math manipulative.
2x = 6

1. First, model the expression 2x = 6. Drag 2 green positive x tiles on the left side of the mat and 6 positive 1-tiles on the right side of the mat.

2. We have to find the value of one x-tile. In order to get x by itself, we have to split the x-tiles into 2 equal groups. We can easily split the x-tiles as shown. We now have 2 groups of 1x.

3. Similarly, split the six 1-tiles into 2 equal groups. We can easily split the 1-tiles as shown.

4. We can see that one group, or one x-tile equals three 1-tiles.

Substitute to Solve Algebraic Expressions
Let’s solve the following algebraic expression using these virtual algebra tiles.
x + 7 when x = 4

1. Click on the Substitute button to change the layout.

2. Drag one green x-tile and seven positive 1-tiles to model the expression x + 7 in the ‘Expression’ mat.

3. As the value of x is already given, drag one positive x tile on the left side of the mat and four positive green tiles on the right side of the mat. We need ‘substitute’ the value of x i.e. 4 in place of x.

4. Drag the 4 positive 1-tiles to the x-tile on the expression mat to ‘replace’ or ‘substitute’ with the green x-tile. Use the eraser to remove the x-tile tile as it has now been replaced.

5. We now have 11 green 1-tiles. Hence the value of the expression x + 7, when x = 4, is 11.

Expand Algebraic Expression
Let’s expand the following algebraic expression using algebra tiles.

Many of our kids’ light-bulb moments occur after school when they discover that mathematics exists in the real world. It includes all of the important aspects of adult life that necessitate basic numerical fluency, such as taxes, personal finance, buying and selling items, and so on.
But what if that light-bulb moment could occur in our classrooms?
Is it possible to teach mathematics in the real world from the start?
It isn’t always easy, but it is possible. Greater involvement and a renewed commitment to learning follow.
Let’s look at some ways for bringing mathematics out of the classroom and into the real world.

Ask your students to find the mathematics in their own lives

Get your students to do some of the work before you decide to cover the entire mathematics curriculum in a single class.
When kids are experiencing difficulty with mathematics or are simply not up to learning on a given day, it’s easy for them to fall into the “We Will Never Use This in the Real World” mindset. They shouldn’t be able to get away so casually.
Have they ever tried looking for mathematics in the real world?
Have you ever challenged children to look for math in the real world?
The likelihood is that the answer to both questions is no.
The discovery of mathematics in the actual world, on the other hand, is far more powerful when it comes from the learners. As a result, don’t feel obligated to justify the existence of mathematics as a subject.
As a weekly assignment, challenge them to look at three things they’ve done at home that include mathematics of any kind and share them with the rest of the class. Students will realize that mathematics’ real-world connections are genuinely unlimited.

Create resources that assist learners in the real world using mathematics.

You may be successful in convincing students that they are already performing mathematics outside of the classroom, but the next step is to show them that there are additional useful methods to use mathematics in everyday life.
A timetable is the most basic example. Between music classes, sports, homework, family commitments, and other activities, children’s in- and out-of-school lives become increasingly complicated. Students will be actively using division for a real-life purpose if they schedule theirs before and after school activities. Naturally, they will learn about time management as a result of this.
As kids get older, the variety of possible applications continues to grow. As more of our students come to us with bank accounts, part-time jobs, and mobile phone subscriptions, a personal budget or basic financial plan, for example, is an important asset.

Set homework that requires you to use real-world math skills.

Homework is an excellent opportunity to teach real-world mathematics. After all, learners use mathematical reasoning outside of school hours and in settings other than the classroom. They’ve finally arrived in the ‘real world.’
Despite this, we frequently assign homework that is essentially a continuation of classroom activities. Finish the worksheet, answer the textbook review questions, go on to the next chapter….
Why not use the home environment to engage children in the mathematical ideas that produce a home run? Here are a few suggestions:
Make a grocery shopping budget for the week. Because most supermarkets have a full online catalog, this is significantly easier because it can be planned out in as much detail as needed. It can’t all be candy or soda, either. A few items on the list set by the parents will compel them to cover mandatory costs.
Bake a cake or cook a meal: This is the ideal opportunity to practice measuring and ratio.
Counting objects around the house is a simple method for younger children to learn about the numerical aspects of the physical environment. You may set increasingly advanced activities for them as they get older, such as a full house remodeling.
Wherever feasible, take advantage of the home atmosphere. The extra benefit is that these activities involve parents and families, making mathematics a collaborative rather than an isolated task in the real world.

Connect maths to other subjects in the classroom.

It’s easy to see why students believe mathematics exists in its own universe. It employs a completely distinct language than other topics and demands the application of unique problem-solving and reasoning techniques.
We may demonstrate to our children that mathematics is not a stand-alone subject by linking it to other disciplines in the curriculum. It’s part of a larger system of knowledge that assists us in comprehending the world.
In subjects like chemistry, astronomy, and physics, science and math are inextricably linked. Students who lack fundamental math skills will have a difficult time reading scientific charts and graphs.
Students can use more advanced arithmetic, such as geometry, algebra Tiles, and calculus to solve chemistry questions, explain planet movements, and analyze scientific findings. When building computer programs and figuring out algorithms, students may be required to solve equations.
Outside of the mathematics department, make use of your colleagues. Yes, cross-curricular collaboration involves time and planning, which are often in limited supply, but the benefits are well worth the effort.

Use real-life examples

During your actual content-centered teaching, it’s worthwhile to take a step away from the textbook and into real life.
Rather than expressing a subject in abstract terms, you can connect it to any of the many real-world situations that are connected to mathematics in some manner. Word problems and research tasks can help students to use an actual, tangible, real-life resource in (or out of) the classroom can be more effective.
Let’s assume you’re teaching patterns. There’s a good chance that there’s a pattern in the constructed environment someplace in the school. It could be a tessellated floor, outside pavement, or even a brick wall. You can utilize this as an actual resource instead of relying on a photocopy. It’s possible to have students:
Continue the pattern on paper or with hands-on materials if possible.
Describe it to a friend who hasn’t seen it before, so they can try to recreate it using their instructions.
Once the students have identified and explained a pattern, you do not need to stop. If they don’t ask you first, the next question you could ask is:
Why would a builder opt for this design?
Then, as a result of this conversation,
Why do you believe it is essential to understand patterns?
One of the in-demand mathematical soft skills is the ability to think freely and with curiosity, which is increasingly expected to develop in pupils. Using this strategy effectively achieves this result. It demonstrates that, in most cases, you don’t need to explain the real-world application of mathematics to children. All you have to do now is lead them there.

How does ORYX Learning connect mathematics to the real world?

Oryx offers a wide range of application problems for various math skills and virtual manipulatives to help students connect their learning to the real world. For example, the money manipulative helps students learn about various denominations in coins and bills prevalent in the present economy. This interactive tool is helpful in teaching counting, using, and exchanging money, thus, clarifying misconceptions and building connections between concepts and the real world.
Students discover how math is relevant and applicable to their daily lives when teachers connect mathematics to their world. These real-world connections are also excellent methods for relating math to other subjects and generating cross-curricular connections, allowing students to grasp the significance of everything they’re learning. It is critical to consider the relevance of the real-world context to the students’ individual and cultural backgrounds in order for the linkages to be genuinely “real-world” for the students for this technique to be most effective.
