Concept
Standard Form – the usual way of writing numbers in decimal notation
Expanded Form – a method of writing a number that highlights the value of each digit.
Rule
1. You read the number from left to right.
In reading, writing and comparing large numbers we group place values into periods 'ones', 'tens', 'hundreds', 'thousands', '10 thousands', '100 thousands', 'millions', '10 millions', '100 millions', 'billions', '10 billions', '100 billions', 'trillions', etc.
A comma separates every 3 periods.
2. Use a place value chart to find the standard form.
Example
Write in the standard form.
7,000,000 + 100,000 + 30,000 + 2,000 + 90 + 4
Solution
1. Use a place value chart to find the standard form. Write each digit in the correct place value position.
