Concepts –Decimal Numbers
Writing word names for decimal numbers is very similar to writing names for whole numbers. The decimal point is read as 'and'. The digits to the right of the decimal are named using the place value of the last digit.
Rules
- Name the number to the left of the decimal point.
- Write “and” for the decimal point.
- Name the “number” part to the right of the decimal point as if it were a whole number.
- Name the decimal place of the last digit.
Example
Select the correct word name for:
300.075
Three hundred seventy-five thousandths

Three hundred and seventy-five thousandths

Three hundred seventy-five

Solution
Use the decimal place value chart to determine how to write the decimal.
Name the number to the left of the decimal (three hundred). Say “and” for the decimal point. Put the three digits (075) to the right of the decimal point in the chart to determine the value of the digit in the last place.
The digit 5 is entered in the thousandths place.
