Concept
Coordinate Plane - It is a two-dimensional plane formed by the intersection of a vertical line called the y-axis and a horizontal line called the x-axis. These are perpendicular lines that intersect each other at zero, and this point is called the origin.
Order pair (x,y) tells the location of a point on the coordinate plane.
x-coordinate – tells the horizontal position.
y-coordinate – tells the vertical position.
Rule
1. Start at (0,0), which is the point where the axes meet (origin).
2. Move (x,y) units to the right on the x-axis.
3. Move up (x,y) units on the y-axis.
Example
Which object has coordinates (5,2)?.
Coffe Shop
|
Garbage Dump
|
Post Office
|
Floral Shop
|
Solution
(5,2) means 5 right, 2 up.
Start at 0. Count 5 units to the right, then 2 units up.
The Post Office is at (5,2)
