Percent change shows the increase or decrease of a number, which can be used to predict changes over time and inform decisions.

Rules

Subtract the old value from the new value.

If the result is positive, it is an increase.

If the result is negative, it is a decrease.

Example

Is the following a percent increase or decrease?

$30 in 2010 became $60 in 2015.

Solution

The original value increased over time.
