Concepts
- A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two ways: as two equal fractions

; or using a colon, a:b = c:d.
- Coordinate Plane – a type of grid that is formed when two number lines (x and y) intersect at their zero points.
- An ordered pair contains the coordinates of one point in the coordinate system.
- A point is named by its ordered pair of the form of (x, y). The first number corresponds to the x-coordinate and the second to the y-coordinate.
- x-coordinate – corresponds to a number on the horizontal x-axis.
- y-coordinate - corresponds to a number on the vertical y-axis.
- Rate – A ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units.
Rules
A point is named by its ordered pair of the form of (x, y). The first number corresponds to the x-coordinate and the second to the y-coordinate.
x-coordinate – corresponds to a number on the horizontal x-axis.
y-coordinate - corresponds to a number on the vertical y-axis.
Example
Choose the correct ordered pair for point W.
Solution
-
A point is named by its ordered pair of the form of (x, y). The first number corresponds to the x-coordinate and the second to the y-coordinate.
- The number on the x-axis under W is 1.
- The number on the y-axis across from W is 5.
Answer: the ordered pair for W is (1,5)
