Vocabulary
Mixed Number - a combination of a whole number and a fraction.
Unlike Fractions – fractions with denominators that are different.
Proper Fraction - a fraction that is less than one, with the numerator less than the denominator.
Numerator - the number above the line in a common fraction showing how many of the parts indicated by the denominator there are.
Denominator - the bottom number in a fraction that shows the number of equal parts an item is divided into. It is the divisor of a fraction.
Concepts
Change mixed numbers to improper fractions.
Rules
1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
2. Add the answer from step 1 to the numerator and put it over the denominator.
3. Include the correct sign (+/-).
Example
Select the improper fraction that is equivalent to the given mixed number.

Solution
1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
2 x 5 = 10
2. Add the answer from step 1 to the numerator and put it over the denominator.
10 + 2 = 12
