Vocabulary
Sample space – the set of all possible outcomes in a probability experiment.
Tree diagram – a chart used to represent the sample space in which an outcome of the first event branches off into all of the possibilities for the second event.
Compound event – an event that consists of two or more simple events.
Concepts
Creating the sample space of a compound event.
Rules
- Identify the categories of items and how many choices are in each category.
- Every choice in the first category must be matched with every option in the second category.
Drag the labels into the chart.
- The total number of outcomes should be the number of choices in the first category times the number of choices in the second category.
Example
How many outfits can be created with 2 shirts (red and blue) and 3 pairs of pants (white, tan, and black)?
Add combinations using the + button and place the labels to complete.
Solution
