Concepts

• A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal. It can be written in two ways: as two equal fractions $\frac{\mathrm{a}}{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{ = }\frac{\mathrm{c}}{\mathrm{d}}$; or using a colon, a:b = c:d.
• A rate is a ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units.
• A unit rate is a rate that is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit.

Rules

1. Write the rate as a fraction.
2. Divide the numerator by the denominator and simplify.

Example

Choose the correct unit rate.

$160.00 for 16 calculators.

Solution

1. Write the rate as a fraction

   $\frac{160}{16}$

2. Simplify the fraction.

   $\frac{160}{16}\mathrm{ = }10$
