Vocabulary
Monomial - An expression in algebra that contains one term, like 3a.
Power – It is the product of multiplying a number by itself. Usually, a power is represented with a base number and an exponent.
Exponent - A small number written above and to the right of the base number, tells how many times the base number is being multiplied.
Base - A number that tells what number is being multiplied.
Concept
Write the multiplication expression as a power of a power.
Rules
Find the number of times each base occurs. Write each base with the number of factors as the exponent.
Example
Write the multiplication as a power of a power.
(a)2 ∙ (a)2 ∙ (a)2 ∙ (a)2
Solution
Multiplying the same factor 4 times is represented with an exponent of 4. The repeated factor is (a2), so it needs an exponent of 4 outside the parentheses.
(a)2 ∙ (a)2 ∙ (a)2 ∙ (a)2 = (a2)4
