Vocabulary
Area: The space occupied by a flat shape or the surface of an object. The area of a figure is the number of unit squares that cover the surface of a closed figure.
Cylinder: A three-dimension figure with two parallel congruent circular bases connected by a curved surface.
Concept
Calculate the area of the base of a cylinder.
Rules
- The base of a cylinder is a circle.
- Determine the radius. If diameter is given, first take half of the diameter to find the radius.
- To find the area of a circle for given radius, multiply π by the radius squared.
A = πr2
Example
Select the correct area of the base of the cylinder.

Solution
The area of a base of a cylinder is the same as the area of a circle.
A = πr2
For this problem, it becomes
A = π(6)2
A = π(36)
A = 113.1 cm2
