Solve for y Equations
Concept
Solve equations to find the value of y.
Rules
1. Get the variable on a side by itself to determine its value.
2. To solve for a variable, use inverse operations to undo the operations in the equation. Be sure to do the same operation to both sides of the equation.
Example
Solve the equation for y.
y – 8 = -23
Solution
y – 8 = -23
Add 8 to both sides.
y – 8 + 8 = -23 + 8
y = -15
