Input Output Tables

Input Output Tables

Concept

An input/output table gives pairs of numbers that follow a certain pattern or rule. This is a useful tool that essentially uses the basic concept of arithmetic sequences, where there is a reoccurring pattern that is depended on the input value, which ultimately, affects the output value.

Rules

1. To determine the rule for a table, simply look at one pair of input/output numbers to figure out the operation involved.
2. Once you know the rule for a table, you can finish filling in the rest of it by merely looking at the input and apply the rule.

Example

Complete the table.
Rule Δ + 2

Solution

1. We know that the rule is Δ + 2.
2. We can finish filling in the table by merely looking at the input and applying the rule. Add 2 to each input value to get each answer.
